Odin’s Dominant Buck Scent Beads are engineered to provoke territorial behavior and pull mature bucks into your setup. By mimicking the presence of a rival, these beads spark scrape checking, posturing, and close-in investigation—especially in the pre-rut and rut window. The slow, consistent aroma release lets you spend less time reapplying and less time disturbing your hotspot.

Use them to kick off a mock scrape beneath a licking branch or refresh existing scrapes and scrape lines. The fully synthetic formula is clean and consistent—and legal in states that restrict natural urine-based lures (always verify local regulations).

Synthetic Deer Scent and CWD: Why the Hunting Industry Is Changing

Chronic Wasting Disease is reshaping the deer hunting industry. As of 2026, at least 14 states restrict or ban the possession, sale, or use of natural cervid urine for hunting purposes — up from just 4 states in 2015. The trend is accelerating as CWD continues to spread geographically and more state wildlife agencies adopt precautionary regulations. For hunters and the companies that serve them, the question is no longer whether synthetic scents will replace natural urine — it’s how fast. Synthetic deer attractants are taking the lead.

Many will want to simply understand synthetic vs natural. The deer react to the aroma, the smell, of a doe in estrus. We create that same smell, at the peak of estrus, without having to (somehow) capture the urine during the small window of time and without having to handle it in any specific way.

What Is CWD and Why Does It Threaten Natural Deer Urine Products?

Chronic Wasting Disease is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) — a family of diseases caused by misfolded proteins called prions. CWD is always fatal in cervids (deer, elk, and moose) and there is currently no vaccine, treatment, or cure. The disease spreads through direct animal-to-animal contact and through environmental contamination, including via bodily fluids such as urine, saliva, and feces.

The connection to hunting scent products is direct: natural deer urine is collected from captive deer herds. If any animal in that herd carries CWD — which can incubate for 18+ months before symptoms appear — the urine may contain infectious prions. During this 'silent' incubation period, infected animals can transmit the disease to other animals. When a hunter distributes that urine in the field, they may be introducing CWD to a previously uninfected area. This is precisely why state wildlife agencies are moving to restrict natural urine products.

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service invests significant funds and effort to monitor and provide best effort guidance to control its spread.  The industry, also, has put significant effort and investment to provide a safe product. We chose to avoid the risk all together!

Which States Restrict Natural Deer Urine?

The regulatory landscape changes every legislative session. There are many deer urine bans in effect across the United States and Canada. There are state bans. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) regulations vary significantly across the U.S., with:   36 states currently reporting detections in wild or captive cervid populations.  As of early 2026, there are 26 states with active restrictions on the movement of deer carcasses and/or the use of natural cervid urine   Which states ban the possession of natural cervid urine entirely? These 13 States it is illegal to even possess it.  Regulations vary by state and counties within the same state. There are CWD Management Zones:  Some states, such as Minnesota and Pennsylvania, have implemented localized bans specifically within designated CWD Management Zones rather than a full statewide prohibition.  Others ban only importation from out of state. Some require industry certification of the deer herd (modeled after the USDA recommendations). Check your state’s wildlife agency website for the most current rules before your season.  Several states strongly discourage, warn against, or restrict the use of natural cervid urine due to Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) risks, but permit its use if the products are certified by the Archery Trade Association’s (ATA) Deer Protection Program or the Responsible Hunting Scent Association (RHSA), which indicates the urine is derived from captive facilities with strict testing protocols   These eight (8) States have “Strong Advisories” against the use of natural urine, but no outright ban or have implemented legislation limiting its use.Regulations Vary: Regulations regarding natural urine, baiting, and feeding are updated annually, so it is crucial to consult the CWD-INFO.ORG regulation map or state-specific wildlife agency, such as the NC Wildlife Commission website, for the most up-to-date information before hunting

The Future of the Category

The trajectory is clear. CWD has been detected in 33+ states and multiple Canadian provinces. Every year, more states add restrictions on natural urine. The Archery Trade Association’s voluntary certification program has helped, but it addresses only part of the risk — and it does nothing for hunters in states that have moved beyond certification to outright bans.

For hunters, the practical choice is straightforward: a synthetic scent that works as well or better than natural urine, lasts longer in the field, costs roughly the same, and carries zero regulatory or disease risk. For the hunting industry, the companies that lead the transition to synthetic will capture the category as the regulatory window on natural urine continues to close.

The Case for Synthetic Hunting Scent

Why did Odin’s commit to 100% synthetic scents?  We are not making a political statement! We are not validating or refuting the CWD studies. We simply believe synthetic scents are better!

  • They are manufactured formulations that replicate the molecular profile and aromatics found in nature.

  • The scent profile of each batch will be exactly as designed to replicate this very specific profile. Mother Nature cannot be this precise.

  • We can be creative without the need to find a natural source for the scent we desire. Our perfuming partners (an international leader with our manufacturing location in the US) understand the “aromatic profile” of the desired scent. For example, Peanut Butter without peanuts. Acorn. Persimmon. What about Maple Bacon and Jelly Donut for bear hunting?  Who knew Pear would work so well when hunting hogs? We didn’t, but read the Field Study.

  •  As a company, we want to address opportunities to make your hunt more successful! It is not just about pheromones during the rut, the Doe In Estrus beads and liquid as well as Scrape Blend and Dominant Buck beads and liquid.  How about Citronella scent to make you more comfortable while turkey hunting? Keep the mosquitoes out of your blind deer or hog hunting when the mosquitoes are out? Put some Earth scent in your gear when you put it away...it will be ready to go when you are!

  •  Efficacy!  Synthetic scents provide us with tools to manufacture your products predictably and provide you the SAME SCENT you had success with before. No difference from batch to batch...from year to year...from herd to herd.

  • As it relates to the pheromones, ours are made without the use of any animal-derived ingredients. Because they contain no biological material, we do not have to be concerned about risk of CWD transmission — no prions, no bacteria, no biological contamination of any kind.

  •  We do not have to participate in the cost and rigorous requirements of ATA/RHSA or RT-QuIC testing for deer urine certification or any regulatory approval related to animal health. And, still, our products are legal in all 50 states!

  • Deliver consistent pheromone concentration batch to batch — unlike natural urine, which varies with every animal and every collection.

  • Have an indefinite shelf life when stored properly, with no refrigeration required and no mold growth.

It’s not just us; Archery Business printed “The Evolution of Deer Attractants: Why Synthetic Scents are Redefining the Category.”

Are Synthetic Scents Actually Effective?

This is the question every hunter asks, and it’s fair. The short answer: yes, if they’re formulated correctly. The molecular profile must be designed to provide the targeted aromatic profile.Odin’s Innovations began with natural urine and transitioned to 100% synthetic specifically because the performance was equal or superior. We acquired Hunter’s Kloak in January 2021 to secure a library of 21 proprietary synthetic scent formulations that had been developed and refined over years of field use. Those formulations are now manufactured by a specialty fragrance laboratory, to precise molecular specification. This is not child’s play - it is serious chemistry! We then combined these synthetic scents with our proprietary biodegradable polymer delivery system — a plant-based bead that absorbs liquid scent and releases it continuously for 30+ days, rain or shine. If the bead is under water (and not exposed to air) the continuous release will pause and begin again when no longer under water, with no dilution of the remaining scent. University laboratory testing confirmed that after 27 days of continuous exposure, the polymer was still releasing 52% of its original scent output. No natural urine product on the market offers anything close to this sustained performance.

Was It Easy?

Absolutely not! That’s why we partnered with an international leader in the scent and perfumer industry.  It is science. It is chemistry. And it requires manufacturing expertise. It was a good investment so we are confident that we will provide you the tools you expect. We can increase production to almost any level needed without compromising the “aromatic profile” that is effective for your purpose. And our costs will not increase as a result of all the extra regulations, testing and facilities requirements of the USDA’s Cervids: CWD Voluntary Herd Certification Program.

Are synthetic scents more expensive than natural scent products?

The R&D effort was an investment to provide us the base to grow. With our development partners, we identified which exact compounds trigger the desired response.  For deer, the aroma of estrus. For cover scents, the smell of a forest floor. For food scents, all foods have a specific aroma. These efforts require advanced analytical chemistry.During the process, there is extensive field testing to verify effectiveness. You can’t rush it. You can’t cut corners to “good enough”. We are proud to have 10-years of field experience demonstrating the scents work as they are intended. You can’t rush to 10-years - and you can’t fake it!

Biodegradable, USDA BioPreferred Certified, and Rain-Proof

We are big fans of the earth! A core component of our products is that it will not leave the beautiful places hunting takes us worse off than when we arrived. Biodegradable attractants protect our hunting space. Beyond safety and consistent performance as a result of consistent concentration levels, Odin’s synthetic scent materials offer environmental benefits that other materials cannot match.   We don’t leave any plastic behind.

We don’t use any unhealthy chemicals – even our Citronella is DEET free!

The plant-based polymer biodegrades. Nothing is left behind.

The beads are certified through the USDA’s BioPreferred Program — a rigorous, third-party verification of biobased content. We did not settle for marketing claims about being “green” — we submitted our products to the USDA’s testing and passed to be able to legally use the description USDA Certified.

The polymer is rain proof. Heavy dew, rain, and snow do not degrade scent output.

We believe hunters should be able to use effective products without compromising the land they love.

FAQs

Q: Is synthetic deer scent as good as real urine?Yes. Odin’s synthetic formulations are engineered to replicate natural pheromone profiles at the molecular level and have been field-tested over 10 hunting seasons. Unlike natural urine, synthetic scent delivers identical concentration every time with no batch-to-batch variability.Q: Do I need ATA certification to use synthetic deer scent? No. ATA (Archery Trade Association) deer urine certification applies only to products made from natural cervid urine collected from captive herds. Because synthetic scents contain no animal-derived ingredients, ATA certification is not required and not applicable.Q: Which states ban natural deer urine? As of 2026, at least 14 states restrict or ban natural cervid urine due to CWD concerns, up from 4 states in 2015. Regulations vary — some states ban possession, others ban importation, and some require ATA certification. Check your state’s wildlife agency for current rules. Synthetic scents like Odin’s are legal in all 50 states regardless of local urine regulations.Q: Why not use natural urine scents?
Natural urine breaks down rapidly into ammonia and other off-odors that can alarm deer. Synthetic beads avoid spoilage and keep scent consistent.
Q: Does it cost more to use synthetic scents? No.  While the initial purchase price is sometimes more than other options, the cost to use is actually less. What is the cost per day to attract your deer or other animals?  With 30-day life, it is MUCH LESS. What does it cost you in time and money each time you go refresh a site?  With our lure scents in front of your trail cameras, you only need to return every 30-days.  Not to mention, keeping the area undisturbed and not reintroducing your human scent.

Q: What makes Odin’s different from other synthetic scents?

Two major differences: our proven history and our extensive library. We developed 21 unique, proprietary synthetic formulations acquired through the Hunter’s Kloak acquisition in 2021 and manufactured by an international specialty fragrance laboratory. We are proud to have 10-years of field experience demonstrating the scents work as they are intended. You can’t rush to 10-years - and you can’t fake it!Add to that, our innovative biodegradable polymer delivery system and you have a solution better than any other on the market! The scents are infused into our patented biodegradable polymer bead that releases scent continuously for 30+ days and is impervious to rain and moisture. No other product combines synthetic accuracy, extended release, and full biodegradability.

Q: Are Odin’s products really biodegradable?Yes, the time varies by the environment.  A good rule of thumb is the time it would take for a banana peel to biodegrade. We also certified our products – liquid and bead with infused scent - through the USDA’s BioPreferred Program, which requires independent laboratory verification of biobased content.

Q: Are there any special storage requirements for Odin’s?No!  You don’t have to take along a refrigerator or cooler when you hunt! There is nothing natural that can initiate bacterial growth.  There is nothing natural to spoil or convert to ammonia. No refrigeration required. No special conditions....just leave it in your garage or storage shed if you wish.  If the bead is not exposed to air, no scent is released and it stays “as strong” as the day it was made.We avoid this entire conversation! (as should you) Some scents are marketed as “fresh, never frozen” and require refrigeration to maintain freshness and prevent bacterial growth.” Some promote “refrigeration will help prevent the growth of bacteria and helps preserve the product in its original state....pure and no additives.” Or promote the idea when asked how to maintain pure, fresh products that to do so they must add “...preservatives that can compromise the products results.”

Q:  When should I use Doe Estrus?
Late pre-rut through peak rut is ideal. Deploy in October–November to maximize daylight buck activity.

Q:  Where should I place it?
In scrapes, mock scrapes, or hang in mesh bags along travel corridors, bedding edges, and near stand sites.
